One of the more common questions from teams evaluating a creator program is "who's actually cutting checks to creators, and who deals with the tax paperwork?" With Socialscale, the answer to both is the same: Socialscale is. You fund the program, Socialscale is the Payer of Record.
How this connects across Socialscale
Socialscale is the Payer of Record
This is the core of how payments work, and worth being precise about: you aren't paying creators directly, and you aren't the one issuing tax forms or handling international payment compliance for a growing roster of individuals. Socialscale sits between you and every creator as the Payer of Record — legally and operationally responsible for the payment itself, including tax handling. What you owe creators is a line item you fund; what happens to actually get money into a creator's hands, correctly and compliantly, is Socialscale's job.
Pro tip
This is exactly what you can tell a prospective creator plainly during recruitment: they get paid by Socialscale, not by chasing an invoice through your finance team. It's one less friction point in convincing someone to join.
How it's funded: Marketing budget, not Credits
Every campaign, storefront commission, and payout draws from your Marketing budget balance, shown in the top bar of the app — a separate balance from the Credits that fund AI Workforce and tracking (see Credits and marketing budget: two separate balances for the full distinction). Once funded, Socialscale handles disbursing it to individual creators as they earn it. You're not running a separate payroll process per creator or per campaign — it's one balance, many creators paid out of it.
What you configure
Your side of the storefront commission economics is upfront, in Settings → Creator Hub:
- Commission Rate — the percentage of each attributed sale a creator earns
- Attribution Window — how long a click stays credited to a creator before it expires
Both apply to storefront-driven sales tracked by the Socialscale Pixel. If you're running a campaign with a different compensation structure — flat fee, product gifting, or a performance-based rate — that's set per-collaboration when you create it (see Choosing a Collaboration Type), and can sit alongside standard storefront commission rather than replacing it.
Note
Commission and performance-based payouts both accrue automatically from your configured rate — you don't manually calculate or approve each individual payout.
Performance-based campaigns pay automatically
For performance-based collaborations, Socialscale tracks the underlying metric — views on a post, for example — on an ongoing basis (checked daily) and pays the creator directly into their Wallet as performance accrues. There's no manual step where someone on your team reviews view counts and approves a payment; the tracking and the payout are the same automated loop.
Watch out
Because performance-based payouts are automatic, an underfunded Marketing budget doesn't just block new activity the way it would with AI Workforce credits — it can interrupt payouts creators are actively earning. Don't let the balance run to zero on an active performance-based campaign.
The Wallet
Once a sale or a performance payout is attributed to a creator, it shows up in their Wallet — inside their own Creator Hub, not buried in an email or a spreadsheet you maintain. The Wallet is where a creator sees what they've earned and gets paid out.

Pro tip
When a creator asks "where do I see what I've earned," the answer is always their Wallet — not a report you generate for them. Point new creators there directly during onboarding so it's not the first thing they have to ask about.
Where you see it, on your side
You're not left guessing what's been paid out either — every payment to every creator, across every collaboration and storefront sale, is visible directly in your Socialscale Dashboard. There's no need to cross-reference a separate finance tool to answer "how much have we paid creators this month."
What stays your responsibility
- Setting a commission rate and performance-based rates that are fair and sustainable for your margins — Socialscale won't tell you if 10% is too generous or too stingy for your category
- Keeping your Marketing budget topped up — Socialscale is the Payer of Record, but it can only pay out what's funded
- Making sure the Socialscale Pixel is correctly installed — payments are only as accurate as attribution, and attribution only works if the pixel is live (see Creator Hub setup)
- Any compensation you negotiate outside the standard structures (flat fees, gifted product) as part of a specific collaboration
Pro tip
If a creator disputes a storefront-driven payout, the first thing to check is the Attribution Window on the sale in question — a purchase just outside the window won't be attributed even if the creator's content clearly drove it. Widening the window is a policy decision, not a bug fix.
